A large late 17th century Japanese octagonal Arita blue and white vase, circa 1680. The vase is of octagonal baluster form, boldly painted with rocks and large blossoming foliage composed around the entire body within stylized borders. This vase has exceptionally good dark and light blue glaze saturation as well as virtuoso decoration stylistically typical of this period. Plum Blossom (Prunus) / Meihua : Plum Meihua is one of the most important plants in Chinese art. Their flowers grow on knurled old angular branches, the flowers are fragile and pure, so they can be a symbol of vigour in old age as well as purity. The tree is the first to flower after the long hard winter, symbolically it can represent perseverance as well as renewal.

An extremely rare Arita vase, late 17th century, lamped. The ovoid vase is decorated in underglaze blue with a large Ho-Ho bird or Phoenix surrounded with stylized flowers. A similar pair of vases was recently exhibited in ‘The Art of Japan’ at Christie’s King Street, London on the 8th of December 2016. The neck of this vase has been reduced and consequently we have had this converted into a lamp with a hand-carved giltwood top and base.

Extremely Rare 17th Century Lamped Arita Vase

This is a really fabulous large Japanese early 18th century Imari vase, richly decorated in fields of black and gold showing opened panels with landscapes and flowering decorations. It is in excellent condition and a very unusual and elegant example of decorated export Imari.

Fabulous Large Japanese Early 18th Century Imari Vase

This large Japanese porcelain charger dating circa 1700 features an unusual decoration: there is no under glaze blue as usually found in the Imari palette but the background is painted over glaze with a layer of black enamel: The result is very eye catching. This charger is particularly deep, has got big spur marks on the back (a sign of being early). Condition: There is a hairline crack of about 8 cm at h 11 that is displayed in picture nr 6. Rare object.

Early 18th Century Large Japanese Porcelain Imari Charger, circa 1700

An unusual and large Kangxi (1662-1722) blue and white porcelain charger. circa 1700. Its shape takes inspirations from Dutch 17th century silver, probably the basin of an ewer. Large mushroom shaped kangxi mark at the bottom. Similar examples and literature: Hermitage Museum, saint Petersburg (Arapova,1977, p.122) : Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum (de krahl/Ayers, 1986, p 1023).
