These handsome large jars and covers are wonderful examples of the grand Chinese porcelains made for export in the Kangxi period(1662-1722) Decorated in underglaze blue, each panel encloses finely painted plants and flowers, in a distinctive style that uses pencilled hatched lines, recalling European prints of the time. Such wares were eagerly bought, when they reached the West, and used to decorate the public rooms of palaces and the grand country houses of the aristocracy. They epitomise the Dutch taste, brought to England by King William and Queen Mary, which filled Kensington Palace and Hampton Court with blue and white porcelain. Large covered jars were often bought in pairs, to stand on the floor in a hall or long gallery, while in the summer months they might have been placed to furnish a large empty fireplace.

A Large late 17th Century Japanese Octagonal Arita Blue and White Vase ca. 1680. The vase is of octagonal baluster form, boldly painted with phoenixes and large blossoming foliage around the body within stylised borders, the covers with similar flowers and foliage below the blue finial. Good dark blue colours, excellent loose decoration stylistically typical of this period and in general good Country House condition.

A rare, oversized, possibly unrecorded,pair of Chinese Kangxi Dynasty (1662-1722) Blue and White chargers dating from around 1700 and made for the foreign markets (export) most probably for the Dutch since the shape recalls one of 17th century silver chargers. Large Kangxi mark on the base, beautiful scrolling foliage decoration on the front. Good condition: a chip the size of a thumbnail expertly restored on the side and not visible in both of them.

Gongshi (Chinese: 供石), also known as scholar's rocks, are naturally occurring or shaped rocks which are traditionally appreciated by Chinese scholars. Like a landscape painting, the rock represented a microcosm of the universe on which the scholar could meditate within the confines of his studio or garden; Although most scholar’s rocks suggest mountain landscapes, these abstract forms may recall a variety of images to the viewer, such as dragons, phoenixes, blossoming plants and even human figures.’ Many factors contribute to the perfect scholar’s rock — or ‘fantastic rocks’ as they were once known — ranging from its geographic origin to the colour and texture of the stone. ‘Rocks of sombre colour are typically appreciated for their sensuous shapes, while rocks of bright colour are generally valued for their massed forms, which best showcase their colours'. A number of terms were created to describe the desired qualities in a scholar’s rock, from shou (meaning thin) to tou (conveying ‘openess’). Hollows in the rock, meanwhile, were prized for their dramatic contrast to the solidity of the stone — and light. Large Chinese Gongshi (Scholar's Rock)

A massive pair of exceptional Japanese Imari vases almost certainly made for a palace. Each is decorated with three beautifully composed landscape panels. Each panel, framed within a cartouche, shows birds of paradise, cherry blossom and other creatures perching on branches and set in idealized landscapes. The borders show an intricate and colorful decorative scheme of large peonies set on scrolling blue foliage. Both vases have lids topped with Bijin (Japanese courtly ladies). These vases date from, circa 1700.
