Rare pair of late 17th Century Japanese powder blue globular vases of small proportions. This kind of decoration (solid blue background with overglaze gold decoration) is typical of Chinese porcelain. Japanese potters attempted to replicate it but with less success hence the rarity of this colour scheme. We only had one vase such as these before. An interesting fact: a leaf of one of the two vases has been painted in green enamel and it was most probably a mistake during the decorating process. An unusual and large Kangxi (1662-1722) blue and white porcelain charger. circa 1700. Its shape takes inspirations from Dutch 17th century silver, probably the basin of an ewer. Large mushroom shaped kangxi mark at the bottom. Similar examples and literature: Hermitage Museum, saint Petersburg (Arapova,1977, p.122) : Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum (de krahl/Ayers, 1986, p 1023).

A handsome and extremely decorative English late 18th century Japanned black rectangular tilt top chinoiserie side table. The table is raised by a richly painted tripod base with gilt designs of foliate scrolls on a black lacquered background, circa 1790-1800. In overall excellent sold condition, the top has a very slight bow due to the aging of the wood.

Gongshi (Chinese: 供石), also known as scholar's rocks, are naturally occurring or shaped rocks which are traditionally appreciated by Chinese scholars. Like a landscape painting, the rock represented a microcosm of the universe on which the scholar could meditate within the confines of his studio or garden; Although most scholar’s rocks suggest mountain landscapes, these abstract forms may recall a variety of images to the viewer, such as dragons, phoenixes, blossoming plants and even human figures.’ Many factors contribute to the perfect scholar’s rock — or ‘fantastic rocks’ as they were once known — ranging from its geographic origin to the colour and texture of the stone. ‘Rocks of sombre colour are typically appreciated for their sensuous shapes, while rocks of bright colour are generally valued for their massed forms, which best showcase their colours'. A number of terms were created to describe the desired qualities in a scholar’s rock, from shou (meaning thin) to tou (conveying ‘openess’). Hollows in the rock, meanwhile, were prized for their dramatic contrast to the solidity of the stone — and light. Rare Japanese Arita Faceted Vase, circa 1680, Lamped

An exquisite pair of early 18th century Japanese Imari trumpet vases. Each central panel decorated with a beautifully depicted kara shi-shi lions and framed by borders of blue scrolling flowers on a dark blue and gold background. Condition: very good, one is perfect, the other has a barely visible hairline crack running for about 15 cm in the less decorated side of the vase.

Pair of 18th Century Blue and White Finely Painted Japanese Imari Vases

A superb and rare pair of very finely painted blue and white Dutch Delft stove tiles dating around 1730. Decorated with a pastoral landscape with naked greek goddesses resting within a Daniel Marot (1661-1752) inspired baroque cartouche panel. Retaining their original bricks in the back which makes them rather heavy.
