A very rare and unusual Japanese blue glazed Arita vase with gilt chinoiserie decoration dating from circa 1700. The dark blue glaze is very unusual in Japanese porcelain and made most certainly for the European market at the end of the 17th century or early 18th century. The vase has been decorated with exquisite gilded chinoiserie decoration. Certainly the inspiration for this type of porcelain is the Chinese ‘Mazarin’ solid blue glaze but this example is a very Japanese interpretation.

A Tall late 17th Century Japanese Octagonal Arita Blue and White Vase circa 1680. The vase is of octagonal baluster form, boldly painted with phoenixes and large blossoming intricate foliage of hydrangea and peonies rocks and branches around the body within stylised borders. Good dark blue colours, excellent loose decoration stylistically typical of this period and in excellent condition. a chip on the rim of about 3 cm has been professionally restored.

We were happy to come across this vase as there are very few surviving examples like this due to the medium’s delicate nature. It is a Japanese Imari vase that, instead of being overglaze painted with the popular imari 5 colours palette, has been covered with beautiful layers of lacquer depicting peonies. Sadly it is not in very good conditions, pieces missing and circa 25% of the total area has been restored very badly. We offer it as a decoration/collector piece for those able to understand its rarity and charm.

Late 17th Century Japanese Imari Lacquered Vase

A pair of mid 18th century North Italian (Piedmont?) rococo polychrome girandoles, circa 1740. Each carved with high relief scrolls forming a pierced canopy at the top. The whole is surmounted by a polychrome foliate scroll and further enriched with entwining branches, leaves flowers and buds. Provenance: with Mallett, London. Illustrated in Mallett " Exceptional furniture and works of art ", 2010, pp. 142-143. Illustrated in Mallett, 2012 catalogue, where they feature in the famous yellow room of Ely House, pp 152-153.

A large early 18th Century Japanese Arita Sleeve vase. Painted in green, yellow and turquoise enamels, iron red and gilt and underglaze blue. Decorated with branches of pomegranate, peach, banana plant and peony amongst foliage.‍ Literature: an identical example, of different shape but same decoration on: Soame Jenyns in "Japanese Porcelain", 1965, p.54 & p.147, Ill. 29a

An impressive Southern Italian (Naples or Palermo) carved giltwood console table. First half of the 18th Century (1740). In full Rococo style and retaining most of its original gilding. Beautiful red French marble top.
