Gongshi (Chinese: 供石), also known as scholar's rocks, are naturally occurring or shaped rocks which are traditionally appreciated by Chinese scholars. Like a landscape painting, the rock represented a microcosm of the universe on which the scholar could meditate within the confines of his studio or garden; Although most scholar’s rocks suggest mountain landscapes, these abstract forms may recall a variety of images to the viewer, such as dragons, phoenixes, blossoming plants and even human figures.’ Many factors contribute to the perfect scholar’s rock — or ‘fantastic rocks’ as they were once known — ranging from its geographic origin to the colour and texture of the stone. ‘Rocks of sombre colour are typically appreciated for their sensuous shapes, while rocks of bright colour are generally valued for their massed forms, which best showcase their colours'. A number of terms were created to describe the desired qualities in a scholar’s rock, from shou (meaning thin) to tou (conveying ‘openess’). Hollows in the rock, meanwhile, were prized for their dramatic contrast to the solidity of the stone — and light. A charming Dutch late 17th century ‘Kwab’ or centre table. Decorated in a green painted surface with gilded highlights. Typical Baroque scrolling legs and decoration. The marble-top later and associated. The table dates from circa 1700.

A fine pair of early 18th century Japanese porcelain models of a carp leaping the Lungmen Falls, Arita Kilns, circa 1730-1750. Made from a two-piece mould, the tail and fins were made separately and luted to the body. The carp is depicted in a dynamic pose bent at the tail forcing the body upwards, open mouthed with it`s Barbles pushed back to it`s eyes it is clearly struggling. It is decorated in underglaze blue, pale iron-oxide, red and gold. For similar examples: Christies London, Sale 12445, 6/07/2016, lot 9.

Early 18th Century Pair of Japanese Arita Model of a Leaping Carp, circa 1730

A handsome and extremely decorative English late 18th century Japanned black rectangular tilt top chinoiserie side table. The table is raised by a richly painted tripod base with gilt designs of foliate scrolls on a black lacquered background, circa 1790-1800. In overall excellent sold condition, the top has a very slight bow due to the aging of the wood.
