An impressive powder blue, famille rose, rouge-de-fer and gilt decoration baluster vase with three large leaf-shaped cartouches depicting garden views and several smaller depicting bouquets. The gilding on the blue background very worn, circa 1750. Gilt decorated covers with floral reserves and finial shaped as a foo dog, Qianlong period (1736-1795). (Old restorations the body: The upper side extensively riveted in the 19th century).

The Shishi is Japanese variant of the Chinese foh dog ; It has a curly mane, a fierce expression, a bushy tail and large eyes; It offers protection from evil. An impressive collection of nine 17th century Chinese Dehua “Blanc De Chine” foh dogs, showing a beautiful melange of white colours (depending on the proportion of kaolin {clay} in the porcelain).

The paintwork is extremely elaborate and well detailed, in particular: The figure's attire, the fringes of the parasol, the horsetail, the abstractly rendered landscape vanishing into clouds, the flame like border decoration and scale make this one of the best examples we have ever had. It was converted into a wine container in the 18th Century and we purposely left the lead tap connector as it is part of its history.
