These handsome large jars and covers are wonderful examples of the grand Chinese porcelains made for export in the Kangxi period(1662-1722) Decorated in underglaze blue, each panel encloses finely painted plants and flowers, in a distinctive style that uses pencilled hatched lines, recalling European prints of the time. Such wares were eagerly bought, when they reached the West, and used to decorate the public rooms of palaces and the grand country houses of the aristocracy. They epitomise the Dutch taste, brought to England by King William and Queen Mary, which filled Kensington Palace and Hampton Court with blue and white porcelain. Large covered jars were often bought in pairs, to stand on the floor in a hall or long gallery, while in the summer months they might have been placed to furnish a large empty fireplace.

A charming Dutch late 17th century ‘Kwab’ or centre table. Decorated in a green painted surface with gilded highlights. Typical Baroque scrolling legs and decoration. The marble-top later and associated. The table dates from circa 1700.

We were happy to come across this vase as there are very few surviving examples like this due to the medium’s delicate nature. It is a Japanese Imari vase that, instead of being overglaze painted with the popular imari 5 colours palette, has been covered with beautiful layers of lacquer depicting peonies. Sadly it is not in very good conditions, pieces missing and circa 25% of the total area has been restored very badly. We offer it as a decoration/collector piece for those able to understand its rarity and charm.

An impressive and highly decorative early 18th century North Italian console table dating circa 1730-1740 and retaining most of its original gilding and inset with a beautiful “travertino” marble top. A very similar example, of larger proportion, in the Royal Palace of Turin as shown in the second picture. Very good condition, no replacements or losses, original gilding, sturdy structure. Impressive stature very suitable for a hall or living room to accomodate lamps or sculptures.

An Impressive Early 18th Century Italian Giltwood Console Table

A massive pair of exceptional Japanese Imari vases almost certainly made for a palace. Each is decorated with three beautifully composed landscape panels. Each panel, framed within a cartouche, shows birds of paradise, cherry blossom and other creatures perching on branches and set in idealized landscapes. The borders show an intricate and colorful decorative scheme of large peonies set on scrolling blue foliage. Both vases have lids topped with Bijin (Japanese courtly ladies). These vases date from, circa 1700.
